The New School invites you to No Longer in Exile: The Legacy and Future of Gender Studies at the New School, Friday, March 26, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and all day Saturday, March 27 at the Theresa Lang Center, 55 West 13th Street. This exciting event is a celebration of the return of Gender Studies to The New School and an exploration of what the community wishes from this new undertaking.
Leading scholars in the field, along with the New School faculty and students, explore the rich institutional and intellectual history of the interdisciplinary field of Gender Studies and speculate about the directions this study might take us in the future.
Most of us who work in the nonprofit sector know about Idealist.org. It’s the place where we go to post and find jobs in the sector. It’s where we exchange ideas and materials and where we learn about new organizations offering innovative services. What many of us don’t know, however, is that Idealist is provided free to us by a nonprofit organization called Action Without Borders. Right now Idealist is in financial trouble due to the slow economy. It’s traditional source of revenue—the small fees it charges other nonprofits to post jobs—can no longer support the wide range of services that Idealist offers. We love Idealist and that’s why we are reproducing an appeal letter from Idealist ED Ami Dar here on our blog.

I’m certain that viewers watching the NBC broadcast of the Olympics this month will not be seeing Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, a skid row neighborhood where author Gabor Mate cares for hard core drug addicts and works with a team of other professionals who are trying to reduce the harm that addiction causes. Mate describes a gritty world where women sell their bodies for a hit of cocaine and men turn to lives of thievery or worse to maintain a heroin or coke habit. In the midst of this, an institution called the Portland Hotel meets addicts where they are, offering a clean room, decent food and medical care. Addicts are encouraged to get clean and sober, but not required to do so prior to getting services. This technique is called “harm reduction” and Mate sees it as a far more effective form of intervention than the law enforcement model that dominates society’s current approach to the problem.
