A Media Advocacy How-To & Other Good Stuff

Our friends at Big Duck produce a very good podcast series called The Nonprofit Jungle and make it available for free on their website.  In the interest of full disclosure, I will admit that my opinion is biased because the newest addition to the series is an interview with me about media advocacy.  Big Duck’s principal, Sarah Durham, and I talk about what media advocacy is, how it differs from traditional media relations and the integral relationship between sound strategy and securing great media attention.  You can listen to our conversation here:  MAKE WAVES’ Media Advocacy Podcast

Big Duck offers a lot of other good resources and tips on its website.  One of my current favorites (in addition to my podcast interview of course!) is a very useful discussion called Your Website as an Experience of Your Brand.  Check it out.

And while I’m plugging the good work of my fellow travelers, let me point you to Nancy Schwartz’s very practical blog, Getting Attention.  If you aren’t reading Nancy’s posts, you’re really missing out on a lot of very useful tips and advice.  Other blogs that I think are especially helpful are The Agitator, which is focused on fund raising and written by a guy named Tom Belford, PR Watch, written by the Center for Media and Democracy, and Equity Blog, written by the staff of PolicyLink.
