Say no to ‘Vampire Power’

Apr 29, 2008

‘Vampire power’ is the electricity and energy that appliances use up simply by being plugged in.  This means that even when your aren’t using your computer, if it is plugged in, it’s costing you money.  However, David Pogue, a technology writer for the New York Times featured a new product that helps to cut down on vampire power: a new gadget called the Power Saving SurgeArrest.  The SurgeArrest is essentially a surge protector with a brain.  You plug your computer into the first plug, and then plug all the devices associated with your computer (printer, speakers, monitor) into the subsequent plugs.  When your computer goes to sleep or is turned off, the SurgeArrest registers that the computer is no longer drawing power, and thus cuts the power to the other devices, reducing your vampire power.  You can see the device here on Amazon.
